Ever wonder, “if God loves me so much, why on earth am I going through this?!?” Yeah, me too. God’s all powerful, right? Right. God loves us, right? Right. Sometimes our situations really suck, right? Right. So, where’s the breakdown?
The easy answer (and actually the most accurate) is sin. We hurt others, others hurt us, and everybody suffers because of the presence of sin in the world. Ever since before the fruit in Eden (before, because Eve’s sin of pride led to her sin of eating it), things in our world have been, in a sense, broken. They’re not the way God originally designed them to be. While this is true, theologically speaking, it’s not much consolation to someone who is really hurting, and it doesn’t help us understand or deal with our pain.
The Bible says that “in all things God works for the good of those who love him.” (Romans 8:28) To explore what this means, let’s start with what it doesn’t mean.
- This does not mean that you will never suffer or that God will always protect you from suffering.
- This does not mean that “everything happens for a reason,” and God is putting you through this. As we mentioned earlier, suffering is the result of sin, and God cannot sin.
- “Working for the good” is very different from “working for the comfort.” What is ultimately good for us is often extremely uncomfortable.
So, what does it mean that God, in the midst of your suffering, is working “for the good of those who love him”?
- Your suffering helps you, in a sense. Despite the most horrific situations you could be in, you will always have the opportunity to learn something, practice trusting God, and grow from it. This does not mean that suffering is good or that you’re better off when it’s over than you were before it started. It simply means that even in the worst circumstances, God will still be with you and will still work for your good.
- Your suffering helps others, if you allow it to. If you have trust in God in the midst of chaos, people will see that. They will see your response to your suffering, and hope to have the peace and confidence that you have, even when life sucks.
